A Big Leap

In September 2024, I took the leap. By New Year’s Eve, Fernweh Guided Expeditions hosted its first trip. Since then:
• 4 events, 2 meetups
• 5 states (VA, CO, CA, NV, TN)
• 3 charities supported, 1 foundation partnered
• ~$2,000 raised
• ~150 humans impacted (participants + incredible crew)
• 2 chefs, 3 photographers, 1 bird-nerd author
• Countless lessons, connections, and stories

And we’re just getting started.

I’m probably the toughest critic when it comes to defining success. But then I get a quiet message from someone who attended — telling me the weekend changed something for them. That they learned. That they felt seen. That they had fun.

Success?

It’s not “bums in seats” (as a brilliant British friend once joked).

It’s Community. Connection. Confidence.

It’s the ability to explore wild places, have meaningful conversations, teach something new, and create space for joy.

It’s watching the sun rise before heading to what I used to call a “conference” — now, it’s an expo. Industry friends, I’ll be in Flagstaff, AZ this weekend at Overland Expo West. Let’s meet!

I always aim for 3–5 new connections per event. It’s those conversations that have already helped shape what Fernweh is becoming.

So, how do you measure success? And don’t hit me with corporate jargon or polished KPIs.

Let’s talk real impact. Let’s talk stories.
